Hailing from Jimbolia - a small town in Romania, Dani and Robert are the DJ and production duo who call themselves NTFO. After a few years of spinning the decks where they've both performed, they decided to produce their own unique sound, the sound of colourful deep house music, the sound of NTFO. The name is simply a result of their former aliases combined, using two letters from each.
With regular releases on notable labels such as Diynamic, Objektivity, 20/20 vision and their own Jargon & Sintope, the duo is surely becoming one of the most interesting acts in Eastern Europe. We've invited them to our regular 101 series where they've shared some interesting and funny things with us.
What was the funniest / most bizarre request you’ve ever had while playing?
There have been many funny moments but the one that we remember was during a gig in Beirut. We've noticed a euphoric guy in the crowd who was making signs all over the night and after the show, he came into the backstage saying he’s a proper DJ that plays hip-hop, r&b, deep-house, tech-house, techno, progressive and he would like to take over the booth now. We've been very surprised and of course, we said that he must check all these details with promotor.
Can you describe your studio setup for us?
The studio is quite minimal. We are not gear-addicted but we use some drum machines, a Moog synthesizer and some Korg Volca Serie. As DAW we are still using Propellerhead Reason; v.10 was just released last week.
Could you tell us the story about your first gig?
We've joined forces in a local Club from our hometown when the resident DJ could not attend the event and he asked us to replace him for a while because we knew all the tracks he was playing (we were some track ID hunters :)). This is how it started in 2005.
Name three artists that currently inspire you.
Sebastian Mullaert, Barac, Dyed Soundorom.
Recall the worst experience of ‘killing the vibe’ in the club.
For us, the worst thing is when we have to stop playing because of legal regulations when an actual party is on fire.
What do you do before and after your set?
Before: We have a power nap if it's possible, we also check the latest promos… Sometimes we receive tracks and we notice the next day that we could have them on the playlist so before leaving the hotel, we always go through promo list again, if it's possible.
What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?
Let’s say that it was when we had the regular daily jobs 5 years ago. That's when we had to stay on a regular office job 9h/day.
What are your favourite labels at the moment?
There are a lot of cool labels at the moment. but lately, we play all the stuff from Moscow Records, Moment and Constant Sound.
Last but not least. What's the best advice you've ever received?
Do everything you want in your life but with a certain limit.
